He was a grandson of the famous chief, Te Te Horeta Te Taniwha. Tukumana Te Taniwha was one of the last surviving men versed in the ancient genealogy and history of his branch of the Hauraki Maoris. He always worked for the advancement of his people and was the Maori leader in the district. He was one of those instrumental in arranging the transporting of the great carved meeting house Hotunui to be deposited in trust for the Thames tribes in the Auckland War Memorial .Museum. Natives from all over the Waikato, Thames and Hauraki districts are gathering at Waimango for the tangi.
