Here is an extract of writing by the great Ngāti Maru scholar, Hoani Nahe, concerning the arrival of Tainui in Aotearoa and its journey through Te Moana-a-Toitehuatahi (Bay of Plenty), Hauraki, Tāmaki and Muriwhenua. This extract appeared in the Appendices to the Journal of the House of Representative, dated 1880. At the time, Hoani Nahe was a Member of the House of Representatives.
