Rōpata (Rāpata) Wahawaha of Ngāti Porou was a significant figure in 19th century New Zealand history. His exploits as a military leader conducting campaigns against Te Kooti Arikirangi of Te Tai Rāwhiti and Pai Mārire sympathisers are well documented.  This 1874 article docments Wahawaha’s arrival to Waihou on 4 February 1874. He was welcomed by the Ngāti Tamaterā rangatira, Te Hira Te Tuiri and Te Moananui. According to the article, Wahawaha had come to Hauraki to investigate news he had heard that Ngāti Porou were planning an attack upon the ‘northern tribes in retaliation... for raids made by them on the southern tribes in former days.’ Rea d more about Rōpata Wahawaha here .   Te Waka Maori o Niu Tireni, 1874, Volume 10, No. 7, pp.87-90

Moehau, a 1979 Radio NZ interview with Huhurere Tukukino of Ngāti Tamaterā.

Image
In 1979, Te Pūrewa Biddle of Radio New Zealand interviewed Huhurere Tukukino of Ngāti Tamaterā regarding a Ngāti Tamaterā objection to building new walking tracks upon Moehau. Ngāti Tamaterā (and others of Hauraki too) were concerned that the new tracks may damage or even destroy the graves of ancestors buried upon Moehau - the famous and well known being Tamatekapua of Te Arawa. Huhurere appealed to Te Arawa (through the then Te Arawa Trust Board) for support and this was readily offered. It was also proposed that a new entity be established to oversee the maunga and that provision be made for a Te Arawa representative, if Hauraki were agreeable, to be appointed to this group. The radio programme also features Te Mata Mōrehu of Te Arawa addressing a hui where the issue of Moehau is discussed and Te Arawa support is expressed.
