‘Te Taenga mai o Meiha Ropata ki Waihou, Hauraki’, 4 February 1874
Rōpata (Rāpata) Wahawaha of Ngāti Porou was a significant figure in 19th century New Zealand history. His exploits as a military leader conducting campaigns against Te Kooti Arikirangi of Te Tai Rāwhiti and Pai Mārire sympathisers are well documented. This 1874 article docments Wahawaha’s arrival to Waihou on 4 February 1874. He was welcomed by the Ngāti Tamaterā rangatira, Te Hira Te Tuiri and Te Moananui. According to the article, Wahawaha had come to Hauraki to investigate news he had heard that Ngāti Porou were planning an attack upon the ‘northern tribes in retaliation... for raids made by them on the southern tribes in former days.’
