A Great 'Native' Meeting at Whakatīwai 1874
In August 1874, a 'great native meeting' was held at Whakatīwai. The hosts were Ngāti Pāoa and the purpose of the meeting was to discuss a large number of issues concerning land and resources. It was attended by all the iwi of Hauraki and it was so significant that numerous reports about the hui are recorded in the local press. See below:
