Hori Ngakapa Te Whanaunga arrives at a hui in Rotorua, 1901

In 1901, the Thames Star published a story about a major hui held in Rotorua to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall (later King George V and Queen Mary). The hui was attended by iwi from around the country and mention is made of Pōkiha Taranui of Te Arawa, Kipa Te Whatanui of Ngāti Raukawa and Paora Taia of Whakatōhea. Iwi such as Ngāti Kahungunu, Whanganui and Ngāi Tūhoe also sent representatives. The Thames Star article includes the following description of Hori Ngākapa Te Whanaunga, by that time one of the last of the 19th century Hauraki rangatira who fought in various wars.
